INDUSTRY NEWS SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC LAUNCHES 18TH EDITION AMENDMENT 2 E-BOOK Schneider Electric is launching a new 18th Edition e-book that includes vital information as well as the latest products to help installers comply with new changes to regulations. Amends to the BS 7671:2018 Wiring Regulations came into force on 28 March 2022 and Schneider Electric has created this guide for electricians to determine and understand the changes. The e-book provides information on the key amends and how these might affect electricians and electrical businesses. These include: •  Changes to special location installations including solar and EV systems, which is an indicator that this area of technology is going to grow. •  Prosumer low voltage electrical installations and the need for systems that can both produce and store energy. •  Installation requirements for fire risk buildings including escape routes and cabling. •  Removal of the CRL calculation and the increased need for surge protection. •  Requirement for new labelling in some circumstances, including the colour of functional earthing changing from cream to pink.

Nico Van Der Merwe, Vice President of Home and Distribution UK at Schneider Electric says: “With several amendments to the 18th Edition, we appreciate this can be a lot to digest and can present some immediate challenges. However, we see this as a great opportunity for the electrical industry and we’re confident that our line-up of

compliant products will support electricians, contractors, and our partners – ultimately putting them in a great position to adapt to the needs of homes of the future and giving them some much needed peace of mind.” Schneider Electric, se.com

CITY OF LONDON RESIDENTS TO BENEFIT FROM £24M POWER SCHEME

ECA WELCOMES NEW EV STRATEGY, BUT WARNS OF DANGERS FROM LOW STANDARDS The ECA has welcomed the government’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy, however, the body has warned that the government’s focus on ‘market-led’ strategy and lack of joined-up policy with local authorities could jeopardise the quality and safety of EV charge point installations and encourage a ‘race-to-the-bottom’ approach. In a freedom of information request to local authorities in England and Wales in late 2021, ECA found that almost two thirds had no real plans to install public EV charge points, and over half did not have any funding earmarked for EV infrastructure. Comments revealed a lack of ‘joined-up’ policy from central government hindered progress. One local authority representative said, “One of the barriers [to EVCP installation] is the uncoordinated approach – it’s not joined-up enough.” Andrew Eldred, ECA Director of Workforce and Public Affairs, says: “There is a lot to be positive about in this latest strategy, and ECA is pleased to see that the government is trying to address the ‘postcode lottery’ in EV charging across the UK. “But this strategy’s heavy onus on industry and local authorities to do the bulk of the groundwork to roll out EV infrastructure could hinder any kind of consistency in coverage and quality. “Safe, high-quality electrical work needs to be done by electrically competent people. We know for a fact that our industry is ready to rise to the challenge of net zero. But a purely ‘market-led’ policy can lead to a race to the bottom on cost, and a drop in quality follows. This will inevitably compromise the efficiency and safety of what gets installed.”

Almost 10,000 customers from Farringdon, Clerkenwell and key buildings in the City of London are to benefit from a multi-million-pound investment to upgrade the electricity network. Work is currently underway to install the first of three new transformers – a device which steps down the power voltage so electricity can be safely delivered to local properties. The transformer, along with new switchgear equipment, will be installed at UK Power Networks’ substation to meet greater energy demand in the area. The £24 million project started in October 2021 and is due to finish in early 2026. As part of the scheme, the firm has consulted local councils and other interested parties to ensure that people experience as little disruption as possible while the work takes place. Euan MacRae, Project Manager at UK Power Networks, says: “This substation upgrade is part of our ongoing investment in the network to maintain safe and reliable power supplies and future-proof the network. The City of London is home to some of the capital’s most iconic buildings, so, in collaboration with our alliance partner The Clancy Group, this project is committed to carrying out a staged replacement of the major electricity assets at Back Hill Substation, some of which date back to 1956 and have been well maintained over the years. “We are excited to be installing innovative equipment which will allow the substation to provide double the previous level of power and will improve the resilience of power supplies across the network in London.” UK Power Networks, ukpowernetworks.co.uk

INDUSTRY NEWS TOOLSTATION OFFERS CUSTOMERS MICRO-GIVING TO BOOST FUNDRAISING FOR MACMILLAN Toolstation has launched its collaboration with micro-donation charity, Pennies, with customers able to add an optional donation on to their purchases, simply and discreetly when paying by card and contactless. Following a successful trial across Toolstation London branches, Pennies was rolled out to all of its estate of over 500 stores nationwide at the beginning of March. Raising more than £500,000 for Macmillan in 2021, Toolstation expects to far surpass this amount with its fundraising in 2022, with Pennies’ micro-donations included in this total. Toolstation’s Managing Director, James Mackenzie, says: “We are thrilled to be working with Pennies to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Our trials have shown that this can be an extremely successful and effective way of raising money for charity, without putting any pressure on our valued customers.

“The pandemic has had a devastating impact on Macmillan’s efforts at a time when people living with cancer need our support more than ever, so we hope we can raise even more money for the vital work they do.” Since 2010, Pennies has enabled over 138 million micro-donations, raising over £34 million in much-needed additional income for charities in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The charity estimates that if every UK card holder donated just 35p once a week, it would raise £1bn in additional income for the UK charity sector. Alongside the partnership launch with Pennies, Toolstation has also launched a limited edition Stanley knife which will see £1 from every sale donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. The bright green knife (the colour of Macmillan) is on sale from April to June in stores and online for £5.99. Toolstation, toolstation.com

TAMLITE ELIMINATES 51 TONNES OF PLASTIC WASTE AS PART OF STRATEGY Tamlite Lighting has eradicated more than 51 tonnes of plastic from its operations over the last four years – the equivalent to well over one million plastic bags. The lighting manufacturer has also reduced consumption of new plastics by an impressive 80% – down from 14.5 tonnes in 2020 to 2.7 tonnes – rewarding its efforts in this key environmental area. The move to eliminate plastics from its operations is part of the Midland-based company’s circular economy strategy. For many years it has sought to move away from the traditional linear resource consumption model, towards designing out waste, maximising value, improving maintenance, and returning materials into the cycle at the end of their lives. In order to make such substantial savings, Tamlite’s dedicated luminaire design team has taken steps to ensure that the amount of plastic used within its products has also been reduced and, through innovative design, is also making strides to future-proof luminaires and expand their longevity. The company has also completely removed plastic packaging from a number of products, including the batten and flat panel lighting ranges. With sales of these involving very substantial quantities of fittings every year, the savings rapidly add up. As it steps up its circular economy approach, Tamlite has switched to card/paper-based packaging (materials that are already made of 100% recycled materials) and paper-based tape instead of vinyl so that all the packaging components are recyclable. ERA RAISES £20,000 FOR HOPE HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICES ERA has raised over £20,000 for Hope House Children’s Hospices, its nominated charity for 2020 and 2021, which supports seriously ill children and their families. Over the last two years, employees from across every area of ERA’s operations have taken part in a series of fundraising activities to raise vital funds for the charity. This included the ‘GMF 100’ Cycling Challenge, which saw employees take to their saddles to cycle 100 miles in a single day. Hope House Ty Gobaith Children’s Hospices supports over 750 families throughout Shropshire, Cheshire, Mid and North Wales, providing palliative care for children with life-limiting conditions, in addition to counselling and bereavement support. Lynsey Kilbert, Fundraising Team Leader at Hope House Ty Gobaith Children’s Hospices, says: “As a charity, we rely heavily on the contributions from fundraising events to be able to run our services and provide assistance to families who desperately need our support. We are incredibly grateful for ERA’s support over the last two years, the funds which they have raised will allow us to continue to be there for families who need us most.”

INDUSTRY NEWS BCIA TEES OFF TO LAUNCH YOUNG ENGINEERS NETWORK The Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) launched its Young Engineers Network on Thursday 7 April 2022 at the Royal Society of Medicine in London, where young engineers were able to meet and collaborate with one another to establish the objectives of the network. They also had the opportunity to watch a video tour of a prestigious new building project for which one of the group has been instrumental in delivering the BEMS. Afterwards there was a further opportunity to network during a round of crazy golf at Swingers. Designed to give the industry’s young engineers a forum for networking and support, the Young Engineers Network has been launched to provide help and guidance for young people who want to progress in the building controls industry. It also provides an opportunity for them to showcase projects which they have been involved with and discuss the technical challenges which they face on the wide variety of activities they are working on. Individuals, work teams and employers will all benefit from the improved engagement, motivation and ownership of this initiative which aims to:

•  Establish a network and forum for young BEMS engineers to share learnings and best practice •  Help attract and retain young talent into the BEMS industry •  Help guide young engineers in their career within the BEMS industry •  Enable young people to establish a link to the BCIA

The BCIA Young Engineers Network will meet on a quarterly basis and can look forward to a mix of training sessions, tech talks and the opportunity to get to know each other in a social environment. Building Controls Industry Association, bcia.co.uk

WORCESTER BOSCH GEARS UP FOR 60TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS WITH GIVEAWAY In September 2022, Worcester Bosch reaches its 60th birthday. To celebrate 60 years of warming lives and homes in the UK, the company is launching ‘More than 60’, a new campaign which sees 60 prizes gifted to deserving recipients. The rewards range from brand new power tools and van wraps, to day-out experiences and new heating systems. The initiative is open to four different audiences: installers, Worcester heating system owners, community groups and the company’s own employees. Worcester Bosch is looking to give away the prizes to those within these groups who give back to others and, like the company, warm the lives of those around them in their own unique ways. For customers, the manufacturer is looking to reward those who naturally spread warmth with their actions and help others. For installers, Worcester Bosch is looking for those who went above and beyond for their customers, particularly during the uncertain times of the pandemic. For community groups run by volunteers, the company is looking to provide a new, reliable heating system to a deserving, underfunded space in the UK. Keeping on top of running and maintaining community spaces can be difficult, and Worcester Bosch hopes its donation can ease some of these pressures. Finally, the company is asking its employees to nominate their colleagues who truly represent its purpose of warming lives in and outside of work.

New research from Rated People reveals how UK tradespeople are adapting their businesses this year to be more environmentally friendly as homeowner demands for eco home improvements like roof insulation, electric car charging points, and heat pumps goes through the roof. Rated People analysed more than 800,000 home improvement jobs posted by UK homeowners on its platform and spoke to over 600 tradespeople and 2,000 homeowners to conduct the study. It shows that almost two in three tradespeople (63%) will be making eco changes to their businesses and work in 2022, and 70% are planning to extend their skillset this year to take on more eco jobs. Four in five (81%) tradespeople think eco home improvements will be even more popular this year for homeowners and 43% of UK homeowners also said they would now be more likely to choose a tradesperson if they were environmentally friendly. So, there’s a big opportunity for tradespeople if they increase their green credentials this year. The top 10 trades making eco changes the most in 2022 are: •  Bathroom fitters – 85% (are going greener this year) •  Roofers – 75% •  Gardeners/landscape gardeners – 68% •  Builders – 68% •  Electricians – 65% •  Carpenters/joiners – 64% •  Painters and decorators – 62% •  Plumbers – 60% •  Plasterers/renderers – 59% •  Tilers – 55% Almost two in three tradespeople (63%) say their main motivation for making eco changes this year is because they care about the planet. An awareness of changing consumer preferences is also having an impact, with one in three (36%) of those who are making eco changes in 2022 saying they’re making changes because homeowners want businesses to be more environmentally friendly. Just 13% say they are doing it because their competitors are, so they feel they also need to. Rated People, ratedpeople.com

CONTRACT NEWS WORKING TOWARDS THE NET ZERO WORKPLACE British Land is investing £1.5 billion over 10 years to transform Broadgate into a world-class destination in London. The campus hosts many of the world’s leading financial, legal, technology, and media companies and some of London’s best restaurants, bars, and retail brands. 155 Bishopsgate is one of the largest buildings on the Broadgate campus. Initially completed in 1988, Fletcher Priest Architects has since redesigned it. Today 155 Bishopsgate has 160,000 sq ft of prime office workspace available across five levels of the building. The transformation includes a complete refurbishment and expansion of the double-level receptions with a new lounge. When it came to the lighting, TRILUX worked with M&E consultant and lighting designer, Hoare Lea, for the refurbished office spaces, and, later in the project, alongside contractors Michael J Lonsdale and Chapman BDSP to further develop the design to optimise space and meet the architect’s aesthetics. The final scheme included a custom product, based on the popular LC60 light channel, which later became known as LC80. The light lines were integrated into the ceiling’s acoustic raft to deliver a seamless, flawless effect, meeting all the lighting requirements with a clean aesthetic, and reducing the noise levels in the office. Additionally, the TRILUX comprehensive downlight range Sonnos, which performs all lighting tasks in a uniform design, was utilised throughout the five floors in white to blend into the interior design. The back-of-house area is lit with TRILUX’s Aragon Fit weatherproof luminaries. TRILUX, trilux.com

SOLAREDGE PUTS RENEWABLE ENERGY ON THE CURRICULUM

PHILIPS LED SOLUTION ILLUMINATES THE SHEFFIELD TRAMLINE Signify has worked closely with Sheffield Stagecoach to upgrade the lighting for all platforms on the Sheffield Supertram, one of the UK’s busiest tramlines. The upgrade is a move from energy-intensive SON-T lamps to the new Philips TrueForce Core LED Road 40W lamps, which promise improved white light quality in customer-facing areas for increased safety and enhanced colour rendering for better visibility. In addition, with this replacement, it is estimated over 800,000kWh energy will be saved each year by using the Trueforce LED lamps, as the lighting installed uses 80% less energy. After several months of extensive research into the right lighting solutions, Sheffield Stagecoach found the Philips TrueForce Core LED Road LED lamp 40W to be the perfect fit that meets all necessary specifications and objectives for upgrading the lighting. This replacement to the new SON lighting dramatically reduces the maintenance costs of lamps and the ageing electromagnetic gear system by reducing the need for frequent replacements and maintenance visits. Philips TrueForce Core LED Road lamps are a tubular glass envelope LED retro-fit similar to that of SON-T lamps. They will fit in the existing luminaires and, importantly, work truly with the luminaire’s optic, making sure that light is photometrically positioned. Signify was recommended as the lighting provider of choice by CEF Sheffield.

SolarEdge has announced that its DC-optimised solar solution has been chosen to supply clean, renewable energy for 11 schools in Coventry and South Gloucestershire. Funded by grants from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the rooftop PV systems are forecast to produce combined annual energy savings of more than £194,000 and reduce carbon emissions by 298 tonnes. The installations were completed in separate projects by Ineco Energy, as part of wide-sweeping initiatives by Coventry and South Gloucestershire Councils to improve the energy efficiency of their public buildings. With just a six-week window during the summer holidays to complete all 11 installs, Ineco opted to use SolarEdge’s Three Phase Inverters with Synergy technology at several of the schools. Synergy is a modular system that splits the functionality of traditional large-scale inverters into three smaller, lightweight units, enabling rapid and cost-effective installation. In addition to working with Coventry and South Gloucestershire councils to improve the energy efficiency of their school buildings, Ineco Energy will use the SolarEdge platform to teach the students about the importance of protecting the environment. It has designed a sustainability ‘toolkit’ which will be supplied to teachers and school environmental clubs free of charge. SolarEdge, solaredge.com

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

A BEACON OF ASSISTANCE FROM ESP According to current Building Regulations, it is a requirement that all new, non-domestic buildings with more than one level, provide ‘refuge’ areas – relatively safe places where people who cannot easily use fire escapes and evacuation lifts can congregate and summon assistance.

D

The new range comprises a variety of products that are specifically designed to assist emergency evacuation situations

isabled refuge systems are called for in BS 9999: 2017 – code of practice for fire safety in the design, management, and use of buildings – as well as Building Regulations Approved Document B (Fire Safety) Volume 2: Buildings other than dwelling houses. As a leading supplier of security and fire protection solutions to the professional electrical market, ESP has been taking on an increasing number of larger, specification type projects and has identified an opportunity to expand its product portfolio to offer a comprehensive disabled refuge range that meets the requirements of BS 9999:2017 and Building Regulations Approved Document B. Marketed under the name Beacon, the new range comprises a variety of products that are specifically designed to assist emergency evacuation situations in a wide range of buildings and venues – with the aim of assisting people with limited mobility to safely exit the building. By adding this new category of products to its portfolio, ESP is providing contractors with access to yet another service that can be incorporated into the overall project design scheme. If a risk assessment requires the provision of a disabled refuge system on a project, ESP can offer the reassurance of a range of products and systems that meet with all the relevant standards. At the core of the range is the Emergency Voice Communications System (EVCS) – this is the term used to describe a fixed, monitored and maintained, bidirectional, full duplex voice communication system to assist the orderly evacuation of disabled or mobility impaired people and enhance firefighters’ communication during emergencies. The Beacon ‘Master Stations’ are the central point of the system, which combines Fire Telephone Handsets, Disabled Refuge Outstations and Emergency Alarms to form one fully integrated system.

Master Station There are two Beacon Master Station options available – a push button version with 2-8 lines, and a touchscreen version with capacity for up to 512 lines to support a wide range of communication devices. Both Master Stations are complete with large handset, simple user interface and includes status and fault monitoring. In emergency use the Master Station identifies the location of the Outstation that has been activated, with clear duplex audio to assist an evacuation process. The Master Station is complete with backup battery function (battery to be supplied separately) that offers 24-hour standby in the event of mains power failure, plus three hours of voice communication supply in the event of an emergency situation.

Disabled Refuge Outstations Disabled Refuge Outstations, known as ‘Type B’, provide a fixed point of communication in a building for users who require evacuation or assistance. Situated in refuge areas usually found in protected stairwells, the Outstation provides duplex audio to the Master Station, which is located in the building’s control room, or at the access points for the fire service. The Beacon stainless steel ‘Type B’ Outstation offers hands-free operation, a compact design suitable for mounting on a double gang box and features clear LED status visibility. An ingress protected version is also available for external use.

A number of IP-rated modules are also available as part of the Assist Call accessories range, suitable for wet rooms and for areas of high moisture and humidity. The options include Call Button, Call Plate and Cancel Plate.

4-zone controller For applications that require the Assist Call Kit but have no need for a disabled refuge or fire telephone integration, a 4-zone controller will be made available for use with both the Toilet Kit and Bedroom Kit. The 4-zone controller removes the need for a Master Station, supporting up to four separate Assist Call Kits. The controller provides clear zone identification and acknowledgement feature.

Fire Telephone Handsets Fire Telephone Handsets, known as ‘Type A’ Outstations, are for use by the fire and rescue service during an evacuation, allowing the officer at the fire control centre to communicate with other officers to control the evacuation. The ‘Type A’ Outstation activates a call to the Master Station to assist the fire and rescue service. They provide a central point of communication in the event of an emergency and provide backup to the firefighter’s radio systems which can fail to operate during a fire in many tall buildings due to the large amounts of steel found in them. An ingress protected version is also available for external use.

Standalone assistance alarm kits ESP’s existing assistance alarm kit will be rebranded to Beacon. The three-piece kit operates fully independently with no master station or controller required. ESP’s new Beacon disabled refuge and assistance alarm range will be supported by a dedicated, UK-based technical team, and will offer contractors and specifiers access to a free design service, compliant with the latest BS5839-9:2021 regulations. ESP has produced a comprehensive brochure covering the whole of the Beacon range, along with examples of how the components of the system integrate. The brochure can be downloaded from the ESP website.

Assist Call Range The Beacon Assist Call Range comprises a number of expandable three-part Assist Call Kits and accessory products which interface with the Master Station, identifying the location of the alarm upon activation. These include a Toilet Kit and a Bedroom Kit suitable for hotels, residential and student accommodation.

TRAINING

PLUGGING THE SKILLS GAP Dave Love, Assistant Director of Apprenticeships & STEM at Warrington & Vale Royal College, looks at how further education can help plug the skills gap in the electrical trade.

P

An additional 15,000 fully qualified electricians will be required by 2024

rior to teaching in Further Education (FE), Dave had a successful career in the construction industry as an electrician, where he ran his own company. Why would a successful electrician move into part time teaching at a Further Education college? The simple answer is the opportunity to give back. Dave says he remembers how his teachers inspired him to do his best – it was because of them that he was able to enter the construction industry and eventually set up his own electrical installation business. Now he says that he is the one sharing his skills and helping to prepare the next generation with their careers. It was when Dave returned to college to further his professional skills as an electrician that he was approached to become an FE teacher. He thought back to his school days and remembered the inspirational teachers that taught him and says it was an easy decision. He thought about all the apprentices he had

the fortune to work with and help train in the trade, and how amazing it felt watching them grow and develop into great electricians. Dave says it also helped that his wife is a teacher and he sees the joy she gets from preparing her students for their next steps in the world. Dave decided to try teaching Electrical Installation part-time at Warrington & Vale Royal College whilst he ran his electrical business. He says it was so simple to get started – he was able to start earning and teaching straight away using the skills he had obtained from years working in the industry. He received funded teacher training on the job and had a mentor at the college to support him. After a year, he switched into teaching at the college full-time. There are so many different subjects and courses in FE relating to the construction industry, from welding to electrical and mechanical engineering. If you want to use the experience you have already gained throughout your career to inspire the next generation, then Dave says he would encourage you to see if there is an FE teaching job near you to match your skills.

“There are opportunities on offer for industry professionals to pass on their knowledge and experience to the next generation of learners in their field”

In fact, the Department for Education recently launched a national campaign calling for more skilled workers to change lives without changing careers by teaching part-time in FE alongside their current role. There are opportunities on offer for industry professionals to pass on their knowledge and experience to the next generation of learners in their field, with a particular focus on key sectors including Construction, Engineering and Manufacturing, Legal, Finance and Accounting, Digital/IT, and Health and Social Care. Dave says he loves supporting learners to achieve their qualifications. This is particularly important to him because at the moment there is a shortage of qualified electricians in the UK. A report by the Electrotechnical Skills Partnership estimated that an additional 15,000 fully qualified electricians will be required by 2024, thanks to predicted growth in the construction industry. As well as this, almost half (43%) of vacancies in skilled trades are due to skills shortages; 13% of that is in the electrical trade. Dave says he wants to help fill that gap through his contribution to FE teaching and give students real life examples from his time in the industry – helping them to link their knowledge to the real working world. He says it is incredible to see the reaction of his students – they really value the real life stories and experience Dave can share from his own work in electrical installation. There is nothing as rewarding as seeing the ‘penny drop’ when you’ve helped them grasp a new skill. Dave is not the only one who thinks FE teaching is an appealing career choice. Research from the Department for Education in February 2022 found that 65% of people enjoy helping others through passing on their knowledge, experience and skills. Over a third (34%) of people say they would like to pass on their skills to others in their field of work, and more than a quarter (29%) of people want to help the next generation. Dave says that it’s brilliant to see that desire to help young learners exists across industries. For those considering going into FE teaching, Dave says just do it! It is an extremely rewarding job. If you have a passion for your profession, you will make a great FE teacher. The transition process is really simple, and there are full time and part time opportunities available. You will be inspiring the next generation of workers in your profession and ensuring your industry continues to have the qualified people it desperately needs. KEY ISSUE

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T JUDGE A BOOK (OR SOCKET) BY ITS COVER As a supplier of products to the professional electrical contractor sector, and an innovator in its field, Scolmore regularly has to deal with fake versions of its products entering the market. Now, with claims of like-for-like products being marketed out there, Kevin Beech, Group Sales Director with Scolmore Group, is keen to highlight the importance for contractors and wholesalers to be on their guard against false claims and to always scrutinise the quality and provenance of the products they are purchasing.

S

colmore has always been an innovator in its field and this has always given the company a competitive advantage. When you are an innovator, some will always seek the ‘easy’ option of copying you. Others will make claims that the products they supply are like-for-like for some of yours, only cheaper. What’s the catch? When faced with a choice of products that ‘look’ the same, here are some key things to consider:

If a product does not carry a BSI Kitemark, customers will not have the reassurance of its safety

BSI Kitemark – does the product have a kitemark? BSI Kitemark stands for quality, safety and trust. First registered in 1903, the highly recognised quality mark confirms that a product or service has been thoroughly tested and checked, time and time again, and proven to meet a recognised industry standard or need. The BSI Kitemark is a quality mark owned and operated by BSI. It is one of the most recognised symbols of quality and safety and offers true value to consumers, businesses and procurement professionals. BSI Kitemark certification gives a product or service immediate status – hard earned through rigorous tests at a BSI centre of excellence, or through rigorous assessments. If a product does not carry a BSI Kitemark, customers purchasing that product will not have the reassurance of its quality or safety.

All Click Scolmore BS1363 socket outlets bear the BSI Kitemark and the company has held this certification for over 25 years – a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to adhering to the highest standards of quality and safety of the products it supplies to the professional electrical market.

Scolmore says it would never make untrue statements about its products

Product quality – ask questions about the materials used. If a similar product is being offered that is cheaper, it usually means critical materials have been replaced with inferior and inadequate alternatives. For example, instead of brass components, copper has been used, or where brass has been used it is thinner and therefore of inferior quality. Scolmore says that it prides itself on many things when it comes to its products – innovative designs, quality materials, and rigorous testing. As a business, the company believes that honesty, transparency and integrity are among the key values that drive its relationship with its customers. That is why Scolmore says it would never make claims about its products – or where they are manufactured – if these claims were not true. The company has been working closely with a small number of select overseas factories for many years now and has built up a mutually respectful relationship with them. Scolmore has invested in these factories to ensure they

have the best equipment, technologies and people in place to manufacture its products to the highest possible standards. All products are designed in house in Tamworth by the company’s specialist teams. Partner factories work closely with the designers to work the designs up to samples and then finished products ready for market. The company then makes regular trips to the premises and has regulated systems and procedures in place to ensure that they operate safely and to Scolmore’s exacting standards. These factories operate on an exclusive basis with Scolmore, only producing products for the group of companies. Anyone who claims that their products are made in the same factory makes the implication that their products are of the same quality, have been subject to the same rigorous testing and approvals processes, when in fact they may not be, and in that way, they are misleading their customers and end users. Wholesalers and contractors need to have the assurance and the proof of the origin of the products that are being supplied to them. Nobody wants to be taken in by misinformation which, by definition, means false or inaccurate information, especially that which is deliberately intended to deceive. People want to do business with companies that are trustworthy, that are impressive, that deliver on what they say, that are innovative thinkers, and that are both genuine and responsible in all their interactions. Scolmore says it prides itself on adhering to these principles. Scolmore, scolmore.com

PROJECT FOCUS

LMXLED LIGHTING THE WAY FOR TUNNEL APPLICATIONS UK based lighting manufacturer, LMXLED, has been lighting the way for tunnel applications with its recent commission of illuminating the two brand new 16km long Chiltern tunnels.

T

his innovative and newly designed tunnel, which will link London with the major cities of the North, takes a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to design. Running beneath the hills, the tunnel ensures the woodlands and wildlife habitats above the ground are protected. The disruption to local communities during construction and the operation of the new railway will also be significantly reduced. This sustainable construction will offer low carbon journeys and will increase the capacity for more freight and local trains on existing mainlines. Having been appointed as one of the lighting suppliers for the Chiltern tunnel, LMXLED brings over 30 years of experience in the lighting industry to the project. With a strong emphasis on design and innovation, LMXLED incorporates the latest LED technologies within its product portfolio in order to maximise energy efficiency and

INTERVIEW

CERTIFYING BUSINESSES ACROSS THE SECTOR Carly Wills talks to Paul Collins, Head of Technical Services for NICEIC, about his role within the organisation and the work that the NICEIC does. CW: Tell us about yourself and how you got into the sector PC: I started life as an electrical apprentice in 1990, worked in various sectors, including domestic, commercial, industrial and marine. I have also picked up additional experience and qualifications, including gas, plumbing and renewables. I worked for various NICEIC Approved Contractors over the years and joined CORGI in 2005 when Part P was launched. In 2009 I joined the NICEIC, working with the technical helpline team. CW: For those who may not know, can you give us an overview of the work that NICEIC does? PC: NICEIC is a certification body offering certification to businesses across the building services sector, which includes gas, renewables, and the like. However, NICEIC is most well-known for its electrical schemes, with the Approved Contractor Scheme being started in 1956! NICEIC also offers various value-added services to certified businesses to help support them, for example, training courses, technical publications, Connections magazine and much more.

CW: Tell us about your current role - what are you responsible for, and what does the typical working day consist of? PC: I think my current role is the best job in the business. I currently manage a great team of people that includes: •  The technical helpline, which answers over 70,000 calls a year •  The NICEIConline system that allows our customers to notify their work •  NICEIC Certification covering gas and related certificates of competence •  Technical publishing which produces our books and technical articles •  Training development which produces content for our training course •  Our regulatory compliance team, who, among other things, manage our UKAS accreditation Every day is different, there is no such thing as a typical day, and it is definitely not a nine-to-five office job. One day I will be working with government departments and other scheme providers and the next, I will be dealing with Trading Standards, solicitors, or supporting the Technical Services Team. CW: What are the best things about your role? What are the most challenging? PC: This will sound corny, but the best thing is the people I work with and our customers. There is such a shared passion for technical excellence and improving standards within the team and the industry. It is very motivating. The most challenging will vary, but overall, it would have to be a lack of pace. Some parts of our industry can be slow to adapt, which can at times be difficult. CW: How has COVID-19 affected the industry? PC: It has definitely affected the industry. There are some positive and some not so positive outcomes. For example, we saw a massive step-change in the usage of technology, which in many cases has improved our work-life balance. However, it was hard for businesses to overcome the challenge of lockdown when there was minimal work going on. Looking at the volume of work and job adverts, I see I think things are back to a new ‘normal’, as we begin to adapt to living alongside COVID-19.

24 | May 2022

Interview – NICEIC.indd 24

electricalcontractingnews.com

CW: Aside from COVID-19, what have been the biggest changes across the industry in recent times? What will be the biggest changes in the future? PC: This is an interesting one. For me I think one of the biggest changes I have seen is perception. A career in the electrical industry is just not considered ‘sexy’, meaning it is difficult to attract and train enough competent people to undertake the work needed. As for future changes, I think the generation and storage of energy will become very prominent. Energy price rises and the potential of not being able to rely on gas will drive a shift in consumer awareness around the green agenda and electrification for heat, therefore we need to prepare for this across the industry to develop the skills to support the green agenda. CW: What’s next for you and for NICEIC? PC: Personally – I hope to continue to do what I do at NICEIC. I am passionate about what we do to ensure the industry has a competent workforce that continues to develop and improve to meet the demands of consumers now and in the future. For NICEIC – watch this space! CW: What do you think are the most exciting products or technologies coming to the market? PC: There are so many exciting things coming to the market now. I am a big fan of technology, but it needs to be a useful technology. Looking at what BS 7671 now requires in certain installations, for example, SPD and AFDD’s etc., I don’t think we are far away from integrated protective devices that are more ‘solid state’ with monitoring devices that measure load, faults and are programmable dependent on the circuit and attached equipment installed. This could give real-time monitoring and identify a potential fault before it becomes a problem. CW: What are your interests away from work? PC: I like to travel when I can and go to the cinema and the gym. I also like to keep updated with technology news – nothing too exciting. NICEIC, niceic.com

HAGER’S TAKE ON THE 18TH EDITION 2ND AMENDMENT: AN EXCLUSIVE Q&A SESSION Following the publication of Amendment 2 of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations and the renewed focus to further improve electrical safety in the UK, we took five minutes with Hager’s Marketing and Support Services Manager, Ian Smith, to get the electrical manufacturer’s view on the impact of the changes.

Q: A:

What are Hager’s thoughts on the changes introduced in Amendment 2?

We fully support the latest changes to the Wiring Regulations in making the electrical world of tomorrow safer. There has been real progression with Amendment 2 and introducing new advanced technology is a positive step forward for electrical safety.

Hager says that it fully support the latest changes to the Wiring Regulations

Q: A:

What, in your opinion, are the biggest changes to the Wiring Regulations?

The most notable changes with the publication of Amendment 2 are the reinforced use of both arc fault detection devices and surge protection devices.

Q: A:

Has Hager developed any new products to support these changes?

Absolutely. We already offer both AFDD and SPD devices and have seen a strong uptake in the market for these. However later this year we will be introducing a brand new AFDD platform and enhancing our SPD offer and, as with all things Hager, they will benefit from all the features that installers have come to expect from us and our products.

Q: A:

Why are you not introducing the products now?

The regulation changes don’t become mandatory until 28 September, at which point we will have launched our new and improved AFDD solution, which is currently undergoing rigorous testing to ensure it can support electricians effectively in implementing these changes.

Q: A:

Why are you waiting until September to launch the new device?

Great question. Introducing new technology provides different challenges, especially with arc fault detection devices. Our customers expect Hager products to work first time, every time and our brand has become synonymous with the ‘fit and forget’ approach which we know is demanded by the professional electrician of today. We have over 5,000 existing AFDD products in service across the UK today. Our new product will see us introduce a single module version. By using real life feedback from these installations, in addition to the 400 devices we currently have on field trials, we will ensure that Hager AFDDs are amongst the most reliable in the industry.

Q: A:

What is the need for so much testing?

As AFDDs are complex and look at different electrical signatures, UK habits and wiring practices are obviously very different to our counterparts in Europe and further afield. Therefore, a standard ‘one-size-fits-all’ algorithm to operate the AFDD will clearly not perform to the level expected within the UK. For Hager, we have to make sure that our arc fault detection device platform is as stable as possible and provides the best performance that you would expect from a Hager product.

Q: A:

What about the innovation of Surge Protection Devices?

Again, we are offering improvements here too. We have gone to extensive lengths, testing our SPD to guarantee the device delivers a best in class performance. This latest development will see our surge protection devices benefit from busbar connections rather than cables. Not only is this neater, but we have data that indicates this improves the performance of the device itself.

Q: A:

What do you think the biggest challenges are that the industry faces?

Any new technology is treated with caution and, now more than ever, responsible manufacturers need to ensure that the technical support is in place and ready to go from day one. We have some great innovations surrounding these products and, combined with the comprehensive testing and technical provisions, means installers continue to receive the best support in the industry.

Q: A:

What can you tell us about these great innovations?

There are lots of exciting new features with our arc fault detection devices and surge protection devices that I wish I could share at this moment in time, but what I can promise is that Hager’s solution will be the best in its class.

Q: A:

Finally, how is Hager helping the industry with this transition?

As always, we continue to support those in the trade, and this year, we have an abundance of resources available. For the first time in two years, we’re back, travelling across the country to showcase at the Elex roadshows, with our team of experts on hand to answer any technical questions. We also have Hager Academy, supporting installers with both online and in-person training materials, for those looking to develop their learning, We will also be hosting NAPIT training courses and exclusive webinars supporting with the changes to the 18th Edition. Finally, there’s our experienced and dedicated technical experts, who proceed to support the trade with their expertise and guidance, so electrical contractors can be assured they continue to comply with the new regulations.

RCDS AND THEIR APPLICATION Jake Green, Technical Engagement Manager with Scolmore Group, looks at RCDs in general and highlights the necessity of a time delay device when selectivity between RCDs is needed.

T

A Type B RCD having I∆n not exceeding 30mA will meet the requirements of Regulation 722.531.3.101 for protection against electric shock by automatic disconnection of supply (ADS) without the need for an RDC-DD.

he principle of operation of an RCD is well understood. Live conductors are wrapped around a toroid, and whilst the current in each live conductor remains the same, no magnetic circuit is formed. Should there be an imbalance between the current in the live conductors, usually caused by a current to earth, then a sensing coil ‘picks up’ the newly formed magnetic circuit and a trip is operated. Type AC – The AC type RCD is intended only for those circuits where there are no DC components, limiting their use to those circuits that are purely resistive. Regulation 531.3.3 of BS 7671: 2018 + Amd 2: 2022 states that ‘RCD Type AC shall only be used to serve fixed equipment, where it is known that load current contains no DC components.’ Most manufacturers, including Scolmore, in the UK do not produce Type AC RCDs.

Type A – Type A RCDs are to be used for alternating and pulsating DC, possibly including the presence of smooth residual DC up to 6mA (531.3.3 (ii)). However, as with the Type AC device, once higher frequency components exist then the Type A RCD may not always operate at its rated residual operating current (I∆n). A Type A RCD having I∆n not exceeding 30mA will meet the requirements of Regulation 722.531.3.101 for protection against electric shock by automatic disconnection of supply (ADS) when used in conjunction with a residual current detecting device (RDC-DD) complying with BS IEC 62955 and as recommended by the manufacturer of the charging equipment. Type F – A Type F RCD is a variant on a Type A device having altered frequency characteristics, allowing for greater sensitivity to higher frequencies. Type F RCDs conform to the requirements of BS EN 62423: 2012, amended in 2021. Type F RCDs are ‘intended for installations when frequency inverters are supplied between phase (line) and

neutral or phase (line) and earthed middle conductor and are able to provide protection in case of alternating residual sinusoidal at the rated frequency, pulsating direct residual currents and composite residual currents that may occur.’ (531.3.3 (iii)). Type F RCDs will operate when a significant proportion of the supply contains a frequency of up to 1,000Hz. However, once a significant proportion of the applied waveform contains frequencies higher than 1,000Hz, the Type F RCD may fail to operate at the rated residual operating current (I∆n). A Type F RCD having I∆n not exceeding 30mA will meet the requirements of Regulation 722.531.3.101 for protection against electric shock by automatic disconnection of supply (ADS) when used in conjunction with a residual current detecting device (RDC-DD) conforming to BS IEC 62955, and as recommended by the manufacturer of the charging equipment. Type B – Type B RCDs are typically voltage-dependent devices. A Type B RCD has the same tripping characteristics as a Type F device and additionally:

Time delay RCDs – A time-delay RCD (typically, S Type) is specially designed to attain a predetermined value of limiting non-actuating time,[1] corresponding to a given value of residual current (BS EN 61008-1; BS EN 61009-1). An S Type RCD operates more slowly than a non-time delay device and minimises the risk of unwanted operation. However, this benefit means that such an RCD is not permitted to be used as a means of additional protection. S Type devices are necessary where selectivity is to be achieved between RCDs. Regulation 536.4.1.4 states that selectivity occurs under the following conditions:

“Great care should be taken by the designer and installer to ensure the correct type of RCD is selected and erected for a specific application”

•  For residual sinusoidal AC up to 1,000Hz •  For residual AC superimposed on a smooth DC •  For residual pulsating DC superimposed on a smooth DC •  For residual pulsating rectified DC which results from two or more phases •  For residual smooth DC whether suddenly applied or slowly increased independent of polarity (531.3.3 (iv))

•  The upstream RCD is of a selective type (Type S) •  The ratio of the rated residual operating current of the upstream RCD to that of the downstream RCD is at least 3:1 This means that a 30mA device would require a minimum of a 100mA Type S RCD upstream to provide selectivity. As part of its Elucian range, Click Scolmore has produced a series of time delay (S Type) RCDs (63A, 80A and 100A) which provide the necessary selectivity for suitably rated downstream devices. Great care should be taken by the designer and installer to ensure the correct type of RCD is selected and erected for a specific application. An S Type device is essential when selectivity is required. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer. Scolmore, scolmore.com The non-actuating time is the maximum delay during which a value of residual current higher than the residual non-operating current can be applied to the RCCB without causing it to operate (BS EN 61008; BS EN 61009).

BRIGHT SPARKS GO ABOVE AND BEYOND REGULATORY STANDARDS A long-established supplier is urging caution when it comes to a surprising change to regulations for electrical installers.

N

Niglon has introduced over 30 new product additions to its already expansive range

iglon has been serving the industry for many decades, and the team has been keeping a keen eye on the changes to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Draft proposals were circulated last year, but the publication of the final amendments has revealed a few surprising last-minute changes, including when it comes to the use of Surge Protection Devices (SPDs). Under the new rules, there are three scenarios where surge arrestors must be fitted: where overvoltage could result in serious injury or loss of human life, failure of a safety service, or significant financial or data loss. But the regulations also state that the owner of the property where the circuit is being installed can opt not to have protective devices included (and accept any risk associated) in ‘all other cases’. Yet Paul Dawson, Commercial Director at Niglon, says he believes most overvoltage issues have the potential to result in injury or worse. “Whether it’s a commercial or domestic property being fitted out, most of these buildings will have people using them for at least a proportion of time – even storage facilities or data centres, for example, need to be checked by a person regularly. That means the risk to life is always there, should the surge occur when the building is in use.

“Given the very minimal time and financial costs associated with fitting surge protection devices as part of an install, we’d strongly urge contractors to include them as a matter of course (and we know this is already the case in certain areas of the UK which are more prone to lightning strikes).” Another change to expectations is the extent of circumstances when Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) must be used – they are now required on circuits with socket outlets in care homes, purpose-built student accommodation, residential buildings more than 18m or six storeys high, and Houses of Multiple Occupation (otherwise known as HMOs). This means they won’t be required for the majority of domestic installations – although, of course, contractors can choose to fit them if they wish. A Type RCDs are now mandatory for almost all applications (again, an expected change – Niglon halted production of all AC Types a while ago). In theory, AC Types could be used in cases where a fixed equipment load contains no DC components – such as electric heating appliances or filament lighting with no electronic components. But in reality, it’s safe to say A Types are the preferred option in almost all installations going forward. Paul adds: “Adhering to the wiring regulations is the very least expected of electrical contractors – to ensure the very highest standards when it comes to safety, and subsequently enjoy the type of positive reputation which goes hand-in-hand with this, we’d always recommend going above and beyond the basic regulations.” Over the past three months, Niglon has introduced over 30 new product additions to its already expansive range, with a number of these specifically designed to enhance both safety and ease of use for electrical installers. One such product is Niglon’s Switched Line and Neutral RCBO. MCB in size, it provides installers with more wiring capacity within a consumer unit, and it is Double Pole (DP) rather than Single Pole (SP) which means it offers additional safety benefits.

Adhering to the wiring regulations is the very least expected of electrical contractors

Unlike typical RCBO circuits which require the time-consuming disconnection and subsequent reconnection of cables to undertake insulation tests, Niglon’s new DP RCBO isolates both live and neutral currents at the click of a switch – bringing greater time savings and improved protection. Paul says: “Not only are we committed to continually enhancing our product ranges to provide customers with more choice and to fully align with all regulatory changes, but we’re also dedicated to ensuring that our products meet the highest standards of safety at all times. “This is why every single batch of the new RCBOs that comes out of our manufacturing facility are comprehensively tested by an independent third-party test house. Yes of course, each and every of one of our products is fully tested and certified as safe before it launches onto the market – that’s an absolute given. But we don’t rely on this fact. “We have no guaranteed way of knowing that a product that isn’t tested won’t fail, so we don’t take the risk. We test, test, and test again. And, with these latest rules relating to the use of surge protection devices set to come into force, offering the industry complete transparency and peace of mind is now more important than ever.” Niglon, niglon.co.uk

ABM CHOOSES VERSO CIRCUIT PROTECTION Mark Ashworth, Commercial Director of ABM Electrical and the IBA Buying Group in Stockport, explains why he and his team choose Verso as their go to brand for circuit protection and wiring accessories.

W

hen asked about what problems he was having with his previous suppliers that he wanted Verso to help

him solve, Mark said: “My customers were asking for a well-built consumer unit with type A RCD equipped with competitively priced RCBOs to compete with the competition. Another issue we had was the availability of standard size consumer units, RCBOs and incomers. Verso solved all these issues, as my previous supplier could only provide type AC RCDs and, through great customer service, have always given ABM the most up to date information on stock availability, enabling ABM to always supply its customers.”

Q: A:

Verso was the only range that could offer both access to products and a price advantage

So how did you narrow your search?

We started looking for a new supplier in September 2019. We quickly narrowed the search down as we wanted to support an IBA preferred supplier. At the time, a deciding factor was that the supplier had to be willing to provide stockist support. When we take on a circuit protection stockist we commit to a large stock holding. We expect, in return, that we will have a level of protection in the local area in return. This is through the inability of local competitors not having access to the product and a price advantage. Within the IBA options, Verso was the only range that could offer both.

Q: A:

What made Verso Circuit protection stand out from other options?

The quality on the build, type A RCDs, excellent packaging, local support and great customer support from the staff.

Q: A:

What was an obstacle that almost changed your mind?

As VCP was a new brand, we needed to build up customer confidence in the product. Thankfully, due to the quality, features and the support of the range, this was never an obstacle.

Q: A:

What sold you on becoming a Verso Circuit Protection Stockist?

The support Verso provided for its stockists, the competitive price of the RCBO range and the quality/features of the products.

Q: A:

What have you enjoyed most about working with the Verso team?

Feeling part of the process of bringing a quality new range of products to market. Verso listened to customer feedback and responded immediately to any queries.

Q: A:

What has stocking Verso products helped ABM achieve?

Based on our previous supplier spend on circuit protection, we have tripled the sales in the first year. All our contractors have now migrated from dual RCD consumer units to RCBO boards, as the quality and price make them a no brainer. The range has also given us the ability to go up against the competition and offer a better product at a saving to the customer, and increased profit for ABM.

Q: A:

Whilst working with Verso, what has exceeded your expectations? The quality of the products and the customer support.

Q: A:

What is the primary reason you would recommend Verso Products?

ABM has seen 300% growth in circuit protection sales

Being an early adopter to a range that has great future in circuit protection is exciting. To have a range that is built to high standards, extremely competitive price wise and have exclusivity over your local competition gives the wholesaler who takes it on a great advantage.

Q:

What has been the biggest impact for ABM, since you’ve starting selling Verso Circuit protection?

A:

We’ve seen 300% growth in circuit protection sales and a complete shift from dual RCD consumer unit sales to RCBO consumer units. We also seen a significant increase in sales of surge protected devices.

Q:

If you had to choose one product feature or service feature from Verso’s products, what would it be? And how has it made your life easier?

A:

Maintaining such a competitive price and availability of RCBOs has enabled the switchover from MCB consumer units an easy one for our customer base. Verso, versoelectrical.co.uk

HEAVY INDUSTRIES MUST HELP THEMSELVES TO HELP THE PLANET, AND SUSTAINABLE SWITCHGEAR IS THE SOLUTION At least 30% of today’s energy-related emissions could be removed with existing decarbonisation technologies by 2030 – but this is not happening anywhere near as fast as it should. It’s like a patient who delays being treated for their condition until a complete cure is available, says David Hall, VP Power Systems UK & Ireland, Schneider Electric.

T

he behind-the-scenes power systems infrastructure in industrial facilities, such as low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) switchgear, are fundamental for keeping data flowing across connected systems. They support essential operations and information technology needed to maintain production. As the world becomes increasingly electric, there needs to be a shift towards installing greener, more reliable, and more efficient switchgear. While some technologies are still in development or need improvement to be implemented at scale and significantly impact climate change, a considerable amount of technology already exists. There is no need to wait – and no time to waste – to put switchgear on its way to helping meet the 2050’s net zero targets. Below, David takes you through the key ways to make a difference and generate the most significant ROI from your switchgear strategy.

SF6: the unintended consequences Since the mid-20th century, sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) has been widely used to replace oil in electrical equipment insulators. One of its most significant uses is in electrical switchgear. However, while SF6 has proven to be reliable and highly effective in applications where arcing can be expected, it is also the most potent greenhouse gas (GHG) in terms of its global warming potential (GWP). Lurking inside the electrical system, if it escapes, it can remain in the earth’s atmosphere for thousands of years, undoing efforts to tackle climate change. Until recently, there were no alternatives to SF6, but innovation and regulation are now coming

together to help limit its release into the atmosphere. Regulatory activities concerning SF6 use have continued to grow in recent years, centred primarily in California, China and the European Union (EU). Careful accounting of the production and distribution of SF6 and, most recently, new EU regulations to ban the use of F-gases in many new types of equipment where less harmful alternatives are widely available, are making the direction of travel clear. Here in the UK, we keep a keen eye on its progress towards tighter regulation.

SF6 alternative – a breath of fresh air

Today’s circular economy is the alternative to the ‘take, make and dispose’ industrial model of the past

In the past, regulations have mostly granted exemptions for the continued use of SF6 in high- and medium-voltage switchgear because alternative technologies did not exist. But manufacturers such as Schneider Electric have been thinking long-term to develop more sustainable alternatives to SF6-based technology, and several now offer new approaches to switchgear design, operation, and maintenance. The new technologies differ from one manufacturer to another, with some choosing to focus on reducing GWP with the help of alternative gases. Many equipment manufacturers have elected to avoid the uncertainties surrounding new and unproven alternative gases and instead use pure air for this green transition. Pure air-based technologies offer all the benefits of F-gas based switchgear equipment but are a superior choice for the environment and operational safety, where there can no longer be room for compromise. In addition to being safe for people and the planet, this air-based approach reduces future regulatory risk. After that, huge improvements can also be seen in ease-of-maintenance, end-of-life treatment, functionality, and performance.

A shift in mindset Today’s circular economy is the alternative to the ‘take, make and dispose’ industrial model of the past. It has redefined products and services while minimising waste and saving money. The concept of reusing, refurbishing, recycling, renewing and retrofitting also applies to electrical distribution equipment. To minimise waste, switchboards and accessories can be reused, and obsolete components can be refurbished, repaired, or recycled. As such, the lifecycle of operational equipment is prolonged, and less money is spent. By refurbishing legacy equipment with modern technologies, IoT can be used to address some of the companies’ most significant pain points and unlock a new source of data on their equipment’s performance. Data can be collected and analysed remotely using sensors embedded in assets to determine how to optimise performance, prevent problems, maximise equipment’s lifespan, and create more resilient and energy efficient operations. For instance, switchgear humidity or partial discharge sensors gather intelligence used to identify and predict potential problems before they become serious. This knowledge reduces maintenance costs by enabling companies to anticipate equipment failure, determine an optimal repair timeline and ultimately help to reduce carbon emissions. Energy-intensive businesses and industries have a huge responsibility to move forward with decarbonising their production processes with new technology and a modern approach. The result will be a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and, ultimately, an operational boost which is too big an opportunity to miss. The UK’s manufacturing output is stagnating compared to its global counterparts, owing mainly to the legacy equipment that much of the industry still relies on. This represents a huge opportunity to retrofit the UK’s electrical equipment and unleash the full potential of the industrial sector. Schneider Electric, se.com

STAY SWITCHED ON TO ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY Calling all those involved with electrical installations – a new amendment to the IET Wiring Regulations has published. Developed by the Joint IET/BSI Technical Committee JPEL/64, BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 marks an essential update to the IET Wiring Regulations that forms the national standard to which all new electrical installations and alterations to existing electrical installations in the UK must comply.

T

he role of the electrical professional is changing, but the future could be brighter than ever for those who adapt. From advanced safety requirements to a growing demand for a flexible grid, our use of electricity and the skills we require from the people working within this industry is rapidly evolving. To reflect these changes, the guidance on the best practices for working with electrical installations has been amended. This 2nd Amendment to the IET Wiring Regulations marks a major shift in what is expected from the industry with regards to safety and sustainable practices, paving the way for a societal shift in the way we produce and consume electricity.

Understanding the role of the IET Wiring Regulations First adopted as a standard by BSI in 1992, BS 7671 is primarily a safety standard that provides a framework for the electrical industry in the UK and many other countries that have adopted its requirements. To improve electrical safety, it is important to identify the hazards, assess the effectiveness of the methods of protection, produce safe systems of work, perform regular inspections and testing, and ensure conformity to legislation.

As a result, BS 7671 covers industry best practices on the safe and effective design, erection, and verification of electrical installations, along with additions and alterations to existing installations. This standard is the most widely accepted way to demonstrate compliance with the applicable legislation. So, if you are an electrical professional, you need to ensure that you are familiar with the new changes being introduced in BS 7671:2018+A2:2022.

The 2nd Amendment marks a major shift in what is expected from the industry

Whether you are already a user of BS 7671, or looking to adopt this standard, BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 includes several new updates that are considered essential for anyone engaged in electrical installation activities. The main changes fall into two categories: changes to safety and the introduction of new sustainability practices.

Advertorial – BSI.indd 40

electricalcontractingnews.com

All electrical systems have the potential to cause harm and so it is vital for those involved in their design and installation to be up to date with current industry knowledge on designing safe installations. This includes protection against fire, which has been necessary ever since electricity was first introduced into buildings. These new changes represent a major step to increase safety and reduce fire risks: • P rotection against transient overvoltages – BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 deals with the protection of electrical installations against transient overvoltages of atmospheric origin transmitted by the supply distribution system, and against switching overvoltages generated by the equipment within the installation. A risk assessment now must be performed to determine if protection against transient overvoltages is required.

It is now a necessity (rather than a recommendation as it was in previous editions) to protect final circuits supplying socket-outlets and fixed current-using equipment with a rated current not exceeding 32A by Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs). •  Updated requirements for the fire safety design for buildings – BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 introduces requirements for the fire safety design of buildings to be documented where specific conditions of external influence exist, such as protected escape routes and locations with risk of fire.

This new chapter covers energy efficiency measures, the interface with the smart grid, the management of electricity consumption, the management of renewable sources of electricity, and energy storage. The concept of the PEI has been developed to answer the needs of the end user, making them both a consumer and a producer of electricity. For example, where a PEI has a storage capability, the user could take advantage of low demand to store energy when its price may be lower. With active energy management, the end user should be able to permanently monitor and control his or her own electricity consumption and production. One of the key components of a PEI is its electrical energy management system (EEMS). The objectives of an EEMS are to control the connection of the PEI to the smart power grid; to manage, locally, the electrical energy production; to manage electrical consumption; and to manage the energy procurement from the grid or supply network. This is carried out using meters and measuring equipment, to communicate the correct electricity parameters to the EEMS and the direction of the energy flow. This change to the Wiring Regulations is an exciting step into the future of managing renewable sources of energy and their integration into our lives. Early adopters of PEI technologies, such as renewable energy and energy storage systems, will reap the benefits in this under-skilled but rapidly growing part of the electrical industry.

Dan Palmer, Associate Director of Committees at BSI says: “BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 is one of the UK’s most important standards, providing authoritative requirements to promote electrical safety. The changes introduced in this new amendment will help electrical professionals keep up to date with new and innovative technologies, as well as ensuring they have current knowledge about designing safe installations.”

•  It helps users stay up to date with new and innovative technologies •  It improves the efficiency of installations •  It’s the product of consensus among a comprehensive group of stakeholders

Shaping the future of electrical standardisation For more than a century, the British Standards Institute (BSI) has been helping to embed excellence into the way people and products work. BSI is the UK’s national standards body and represents UK economic and social interests in the development of business information solutions for British organisations of all sizes and sectors. Its role is to help improve the quality and safety of products, services, and systems by enabling the creation of standards and encouraging their use. BSI’s extensive catalogue of standards can help electrical engineers, electricians and product designers ensure safety, performance, and compliance for a huge range of equipment. They can also support electronic manufacturers in achieving CE marking, needed for marketing most electrical goods in Europe. Ensure you’re complying with the latest IET Wiring Regulations. Prioritising electrical sustainability For most electrical professionals, the world of work will have changed considerably over the last few years. Sustainability is now at the forefront of everyone’s minds. There are several reasons for this: the global climate crisis, net zero 2050 targets written into law, new energy efficiency legislation, not to mention rapid advances in technology. Along with other important electrical safety changes, the new 2022 amendment to BS 7671 contains a new chapter on prosumer’s low voltage electrical installations.

THE CREATIVE SPARK THAT COULD PROVIDE AN EASY FIX FOR RISING BILLS AND EMISSIONS Adam Taylor, Heating and Plumbing Product Specialist from builder’s merchants, Beesley & Fildes, discusses the potential of electric boilers as a commercial opportunity for electrical contractors.

W

e started 2022 with warnings that gas prices were set to rocket this year, creating increased costs for those running businesses, as well as those running their own home. Since then, the invasion of Ukraine and sanctions on Russia have left fossil fuel markets in turmoil. The crisis not only means further price increases in the short term, but has also led European countries, including the UK, to consider how they can reduce their reliance on oil and gas and improve resilience in the longer term.

An electric boiler reduces maintenance costs and provides an assurance of occupier safety

The obvious answer is renewable energy for both domestic and commercial properties. The UK Government is championing air source heat pumps as the solution for domestic properties, with grants available to encourage take-up. But for commercial premises, there needs to be a more pragmatic approach to how we harness renewable energy to provide heating and hot water. Large scale solar panel installations, biomass, wind turbines and CHPs are all potential answers for larger commercial and industrial premises, but what of small offices and business premises such as restaurants, shops and hairdressers? The reality for these types of commercial properties is that it may not be possible to install renewable energy technologies, particularly air source heat pumps, as these can be difficult and expensive to retrofit and have a long payback period. However, it is still possible to convert to renewable energy for heating and hot water by opting for an electric boiler and switching to a utilities provider that supplies entirely from renewable sources. This way, they can reduce the cost and disruption of retrofitting a new boiler, further their environmental goals and reduce their vulnerability to energy cost uncertainty. For electrical contractors, the ease of retrofit and fit and forget benefits of electric boilers present an opportunity to offer electric boiler installations for small commercial premises as part of an electric fit-out or retrofit programme.

An easy alternative The need to transition from gas to alternative energy sources for heat and hot water is environmental, financial and political, which makes for a compelling need to find viable solutions. But any transition is easier if we can find an alternative that is similar enough to what we’re used to – easy and familiar, while still providing the advantages of something different. Electric boilers provide that potential. For existing properties, electric boilers can be installed using legacy pipework and radiators. In effect, the electric boiler is a like-for-like switch for its gas predecessor. This not only minimises disruption for the building owner or occupier, but also reduces the installation costs and avoids any additional costs involved in modifying the property for new technology.

42 | May 2022

HVAC – Beesley & Fildes.indd 42

electricalcontractingnews.com

@ElecConNews

For building owners and commercial property landlords, a switch from a gas boiler to an electric boiler is particularly beneficial, because an electric boiler requires no flue, no gas safety certification and no mandatory maintenance inspections. Consequently, an electric boiler reduces maintenance costs and provides an assurance of occupier safety, with no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks or explosion.

Myth busting One of the common push backs when it comes to electric boilers is the running costs. Electric boilers often seem cost prohibitive as compared to gas, but they can be operated using renewable energy sources to keep running costs down. Electric boilers also provide an ideal energy source for underfloor heating, delivering a solution for contemporary commercial properties. The other key factor that must be considered is comfort. While, historically, electric heating has had a reputation for providing a less consistent heat output, this is no longer the case. Contemporary electric boilers, such as the EHS boilers stocked by Beesley & Fildes, are efficient and reliable – the key is to specify the correct size and type of boiler for the property. Just like gas boilers, they can also benefit from the use of smart controls, enabling the occupier to programme in their own requirements or control their heating remotely for improved comfort, energy efficiency and cost management in real time.

Educating the market For electrical contractors, the potential opportunities presented by contemporary electrical boiler products are wide ranging. However, there will be a need to understand the ease of retrofit, ease of management, running cost and environmental advantages of making the change and be able to sell these benefits. With the investment in sustainable energy infrastructure promising low costs and environmental impact from electric heating, CO2 savings compared to gas, and practical considerations compared to heat pumps, electric boilers should be an important part of the future of heating and hot water installations for small commercial properties. THE SMART WAY TO PUT A CAP ON ENERGY BILLS Households are facing huge hikes in energy bills as a result of the new price cap recently announced. Katie Plumstead, Group Marketing Manager at ESP, looks at some of the measures households can take to help reduce the impact, and has advice for wholesalers on the products they can access.

W

ith the new energy price cap announced by Ofgem that came into force on 1 April, average energy bills are expected to increase by £693 to £1,971 a year - a rise of 54%. Experts have also warned that the energy price cap could rise once again in October 2022 by 20%. With heating and hot water accounting for around 50% of the total energy consumed in a typical UK home, householders are facing stark choices when it comes to managing their budgets and there is a sharp focus on the measures that can be taken to help reduce energy consumption and combat rising bills.

A smart thermostat is something that installers can easily add to their customers’ home heating

Research shows that few people really understand their heating controls

44 | May 2022

HVAC – ESP.indd 44

There is no shortage of advice out there on simple things that can be done in the home to cut energy usage, and the Energy Savings Trust has published a table showing the typical yearly savings that occupiers of an average three-bedroom gas heated home in Great Britain could make. Among the measures suggested are turning off lighting, switching off standby, draught-proofing gaps in doors and windows, taking a four-minute shower, washing at 30 degrees and not overfilling the kettle. The experts at The Energy Saving Trust also dispel the myth that it is cheaper to have the heating on low all day. They say having the heating on only when you need it is, in the long run, the best way to save energy, and therefore money. Understanding how their heating system is performing and how they can make small changes to improve its efficiency is another consideration for householders. It may be that installing new heating controls - timers, and thermostats - or replacing older models with more efficient ones, can help them have more control over when the heating should be on and what temperature the rooms should be. Research shows that few people really understand their heating controls and many simply just don’t use them. This is where installers, supported by manufacturers and wholesalers, can play a part in advising and educating

electricalcontractingnews.com

@ElecConNews

consumers on the best products for their circumstances and how to use them.

Smart choice The evolution of smart technology has a key role to play in energy efficiency. It provides homeowners with a real opportunity to make conscious decisions about how they heat their homes and what effect this can have on their energy bills. A smart thermostat is something that installers can easily add to their customers’ home heating, allowing householders to control and monitor the room temperature and thermostat activity from anywhere in the world, via an app on a smart phone or tablet. It is estimated that 6% of households in the UK already have smart thermostats, according to YouGov, which adds up to 1.67 million homes. That is just a fraction of the 22 million households estimated to be affected by the new energy price hike. Helping homeowners understand how their heating system is performing and how they can make small changes to improve its efficiency should be a priority for installers. By recommending the installation of smart thermostats and giving advice on heating controls, they can help householders to make immediate savings. ESP, espuk.com

OCTOPUS ENERGY INVESTS IN NORTHERN IRISH HEAT PUMP EXPERTS TO BUILD THOUSANDS OF HEAT PUMPS A MONTH Octopus Energy Group has announced a strategic investment into heat pump manufacturer, Renewable Energy Devices (RED), making heat pumps cheaper and better for UK customers.

T

he multi-million pound deal sees Octopus take a controlling interest in Northern Irish firm RED, and full acquisition by the end of this year. The partnership will allow the companies to build quiet, highly efficient and stylish-looking heat pumps initially for UK customers. The products will come in a range of different sizes, with a focus on smaller options suitable for the most common homes in the UK. When bought with the government’s new Boiler Upgrade Scheme, they will cost about the same as a gas boiler. By scaling production, the partners are planning to bring costs down even further, with a view to eliminating the need for government support over time. The investment is the latest in a long line of commitments Octopus Energy has made to building an industry around low carbon heating and heat pumps, following a £10 million investment into the UK’s first research and development centre for the decarbonisation of heat, based in Slough. RED’s existing factory in Craigavon will see a significant expansion following the investment, creating 100 new green engineering jobs by 2024. Octopus is expecting the factory to produce over 1,000 heat pumps a month by the end of this year and keep growing from there. The partners are also in the process of scoping other locations to build further heat pump manufacturing facilities. RED is a UK heat pump designer and manufacturer and the only one sourcing over 80% of parts for its products within the country. The team, which is led by Dr Jason Cassells, designs and manufactures a range of innovative patented air source heat pumps in-house, including its controls, software and heating distribution systems, making low carbon heating more accessible and regionally sourced. The team will continue to be based in Craigavon, Northern Ireland. Octopus says that it plans to incorporate its ‘smart grid’ technology into the heat pumps, which will enable the pumps to make the most of ‘spare’ capacity on the electricity grid and distribution networks, reduce the load at peak times – and lower running costs for customers. For homes with electric vehicles and/or solar panels,

46 | May 2022

HVAC – Octopus Energy.indd 46

the smart tech will further enhance efficiency – for example, solar panels could reduce heat pump running costs by as much as 70%. Heat pumps are one of the main pillars of the UK Government’s roadmap for a greener and more secure energy future. In its Energy Security Strategy, the Government announced the launch of a Heat Pump Investment Accelerator Competition in 2022. The scheme will be worth up to £30 million and is aimed at making heat pumps in the UK, increasing the country’s energy independence by reducing the demand for gas. Greg Jackson, Founder and CEO of Octopus Energy Group, comments: “I am absolutely thrilled that Jason and his team are joining forces with us. Their huge talent has created exceptional technology for efficient, quiet heat pumps. “This agreement will involve major investments into heat pump manufacturing, creating valuable green jobs across the UK and helping increase our energy security

electricalcontractingnews.com

by getting more homes off gas, and drive down costs for customers. “This is the ‘Model T’ moment for the heat pump industry. Thousands of heat pumps rolling out of RED’s Craigavon factory a month is just the beginning. Like the original Ford, we’re planning to scale production every year, cutting costs even further and making heat pumps affordable for everyone.” The UK Government is targeting 600,000 heat pumps to be installed every year by 2028. To accelerate this process and lower the costs of heat pumps, Chancellor Rishi Sunak recently announced that the government is scrapping the 5% VAT on home energy efficiency technology, including heat pumps, over the next five years. In addition, the Government’s new Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is offering households a £5,000 grant if they install a new air-source heat pump in their home.

For the first time, the connected models also give a calibration warning with the Cal Guard Function – a world first developed by Bosch, which informs you of possible calibration influences. There are various external influences which can interfere with the calibration of the line laser and are not always apparent at first glance. For example, if the tool has been heavily shaken in a fall or stored at a temperature outside the permissible range of between -20°C and +70°C, the tool displays these events via a red LED light that warns of calibration errors, thus ensuring precise results. The app provides you with detailed information about the warning, meaning that work can be carried out with precision. The Cal Guard Function also informs you when the recommended 12-month calibration interval has expired. The Bosch sensors monitor the condition of the measuring tool constantly, even when it is switched off. If the measuring tool is not connected to a battery power supply, an internal energy storage device will support monitoring for 72 hours.

INSTALLING AN ELECTRIC FUTURE How the big charging infrastructure question is placing a spotlight on the electrical trade, according to Brinley Buckley-Roberts, Product Marketing Executive at C.K Tools

T

The success of the EV relies solely on the ability of the UK government

he rise of the electric vehicle (EV) is well and truly upon us, and we are currently witnessing a proliferation of more affordable vehicles hitting the market; it feels very much like 2022 is going to be game-changer for the automotive sector – but also the electrical trade. The reason for the latter comment is that the success of the EV relies solely on the ability of the UK Government and its technology partners in establishing a robust, accessible, commercial, domestic and geographically abundant charging infrastructure. However, there are still many questions to be answered here, given the nature of the UK’s residential set-up. On top of the aforementioned points, the ability of any charging network to deliver quick and efficient charges will be paramount in encouraging consumer adoption of EVs, particularly given the ease with which car refuelling has developed after 100 years of petrochemical fuels.

50 | May 2022

Tools & Workwear – CK Tools.indd 50

“The ability of any charging network to deliver quick and efficient charges will be paramount in encouraging consumer adoption of EV”

Additionally, the likes of the software industry are also helping to increase the pace of change; there’s now software that uses telematics (vehicle trip) data to tell fleet owners which vehicles could be switched to EV, the best vehicles on the market for them and where they should place their own chargers, so the demand is only going to increase. All this means the electrical sector will be under one of the biggest spotlights it has ever experienced – designers, specifiers and installers will all have roles to play. On the installer front, the electrical sector has got on the front foot in partnership with education and training partners across the country, with qualifications now available for practicing electricians interested in understanding how to install the equipment and systems available in public, private and commercial locations – which can be achieved for less than a new tool storage bag and with just 20 hours of tuition. There’s even 22-day courses for applicants with no electrical experience, which clearly shows the way the EV sector is going. There’s a long road ahead for the UK’s charging infrastructure; the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has suggested that the UK needs to increase its 25,000 charging stations ten-fold by 2030 to meet demand. This means there is set to be no shortage of demand for installers, with great opportunity to either switch career focus (whether you’re an existing electrician or not) or supplement the existing workload. But what do installers need to do their job? What tools and accessories? How does it differ from a standard electrician’s or electrical contractor’s kit? The Institution of Engineering and Technology has launched its own code of practice to provide a clear directive on the considerations and mandatories for every type of EV charger equipment installation, in line with the very latest amendment to BS 7671. While a tight code of practice (as you would expect), there is no specific requirement for new tools or accessories that aren’t readily available to the every-day

electricalcontractingnews.com

@ElecConNews

electrician, more a requirement of specific tools and accessories to use. As C.K Tools does with most of its product research and development, the company spent some time with its panel of electricians and installers to develop tools and kits specific for this job, to ensure clarity, comfort, control and efficiency on every job. As a result, C.K Tools has assembled two high quality EV specific kits for both existing and newly qualified installers – an EV Hand Tool Kit and EV Power Tools Accessories (PTA) Kit. Combined, they provide an easy one-stop-shop for any installer. The C.K EV Hand Tool Kit (T5984) is a collection of premium hand tools that provide everything needed to get the job done efficiently and professionally. It includes a state-of-the-art C.K Magma Technician’s Wheeled Case packed full of 25 premium hand tools designed to complete the stages of: inspection and quotation; routing the cable from MCB to charger; mounting the charge point; fitting the cable to the charger point; terminating to MCB; fitting an earthing rod; and re-assembling the charge point. The C.K PTA Kit (T5985) – which can be purchased separately – provides a great range of power tool accessories including quality drill bits, driver bits and hole saws to help complete the installation of EV chargers with the minimum of fuss. The new C.K EV specific Kits offer everything needed to complete the steps involved to complete an installation efficiently and professionally. As the landscape changes over the next decade and the way of powering our vehicles becomes more connected than ever before, the impact on the skill, capabilities, qualifications and accompanying tool kits of the EV charge equipment installer may also change. As a business that has been at the forefront of hand tool manufacturing for more than 100 years, C.K Tools says it will continue to ensure its support as the electrical sector navigates one of the biggest demands and opportunities in history on its workforce. ELECTRIC ARC — UNDERSTAND THE RISKS AND PROTECT YOURSELF! Whilst it’s an employer’s legal responsibility to ensure that staff have the right level of protection and training against risks on site, employees have a personal responsibility to be aware of risks and potential injuries to ensure adequate protection for themselves, their safety and wellbeing, writes Peter Dumigan, Managing Director of the Hultafors Group UK, owner of Snickers Workwear and its ProtecWork range of Protective Wear.

D

epending on the job task to be performed, PPE for electricians generally includes safety glasses, face shields, hard hats, safety shoes, insulating (rubber) gloves and flame-resistant clothing. In terms of clothing, there’s a big difference between conventional workwear and specialist protective wear. Over the years, workwear has evolved to make your working day more comfortable and efficient, with built-in functionality for tools and fixings, as well as protection against cold, rain and the effects of warm weather. Protective wear, which can have one or more CE (European Conformity) marks, has been designed and developed to protect the wearer from serious risks such as heat, flames, electric arcs and hazardous chemicals. In effect, clothing that can mean the difference between life and death for the wearer. In order to meet the protective requirements of a specific risk area, protective wear is divided into three categories – the higher the category number, the higher the level of protection. • C ategory I covers exposure to minimal risks, and for this category there are CE standards such as EN 343 (rain protection) and EN 14058 (cold protection). •  Category II includes exposure to medium risks, for instance EN 20471 for high visibility clothing. •  Category III covers exposure to serious risks, which include major hazards such as electric arcs and molten metal splashes or liquid chemicals. To be able to properly identify what protection you need, you have to know what risks you, your employees or your workmates face.

52 | May 2022

Tools & Workwear – Hultafors.indd 52

Never assume that a Category I garment will protect against the more serious hazards and risks defined in Category III. It won’t and you’ll be putting yourself at serious risk if you think it will. That means understanding the hazards and risks of a specific electrician’s working environment or knowing the risk level before you start work and, therefore, wear appropriate clothing and PPE accessories. That risk assessment and therefore the determination of the calorie levels required in the clothing needed has to be carried out by the company buying the clothing. Importantly, each working situation will have its own required minimum protection, depending on the risk situation. How do I know the protection level of my outfit? It all starts with having working clothes with the appropriate CE mark for the specific risk environment. In work locations that involve a risk of electric arcing, you must also ensure your clothing offers a level of protection that corresponds to the risk level – Category III. You do this by adding up the total number of calories of all the layers of your outfit and it’s important to remember that high-risk environments require that all the clothes you wear, including underwear and base layers, provide protection against heat and flames. In PPE terms, calories are used to define the protection level of a fabric, an item of clothing or the system of materials/garments. When an electric arc is triggered, different types of energy and risk factors are created, such as arc power, arc energy and incident energy, all of which are measured in calories. This is why calories per

square centimetre (cal/cm2) has become the unit used to measure a fabric’s or garment’s level of protection. Arcs due to electrical faults can cause severe injuries and damage such as thermal injury, serious burns, electric shock, noise, UV emissions, pressure and shrapnel, as well as toxic exposure and the impact of physical and mental shock. “Based on independent tests and reports coupled with our years of experience, we recommend that you should never wear garments that offer total protection of less than 11 calories/cm2 if you are going to work in or near a high-risk environment”, says Peter Dumigan. The main benefit of wearing layers is that the air gap formed between different garments provides increased protection. There is no general rating for how much increased protection the air gap between layers provides. However, Hultafors has conducted a number of tests that show that the air gap increases protection by more than 5 calories/cm2. The calorie level of the extra protection depends on a variety of factors, such as fabric structure, thickness and construction – and for a precise value, combined tests on each layer must be performed. “What we know for certain,” says Peter, “is that wearing multiple layers improves the protection rating. It’s therefore best to think of the air gap between each layer as extra protection that improves your chances of avoiding burns in the event of an accident.” Arcs due to electrical faults can cause severe injuries and damage. So it’s vital that you choose the right protective wear to ensure your safety and well-being on site. Hultafors Group UK, hultaforsgroup.com

STRIPPING BACK THE HASSLE David Barnes, Marketing Manager of KNIPEX UK, explains how specialist cable stripping tools can help electricians save time, money and effort.

good cable stripping tool can save hours on large wiring installations. That is why manufacturers, such as KNIPEX, have worked hard to save electrical contractors time, money and effort by developing tools that strip or dismantle cables quickly and easily. Cable stripping tools range from the small, notched versions to the larger, automatic tools which regulate the stripping depth for you. Investment in research and development has ensured a range of hand tool innovations have been brought to the market that have made a real difference out on site. Tools such as the KNIPEX ErgoStrip, for example, is small, versatile and capable of stripping and dismantling round cables used in modern house installations. It is very easy to use – the insertion points for coax and data cables are angled so, with just a little bit of gentle pressure, the cables simply slide into the correct position all by themselves. The shape of the KNIPEX ErgoStrip, allows for a comfortable pistol grip which means there is no need to change grip when disassembling. It’s ideal for work in confined spaces such as junction boxes and distribution boxes as the tapered tool ends allow for dismantling in cramped areas.

American style

The location ridges on the wire stripping holes correct the cable position for stripping and can be found intuitively. A length scale is also provided so cables can be dismantled and stripped to the same length. Moreover, cables can be cut lengthwise conveniently and safely using the practical cable guide parallel to the half shells, where the cable is automatically pressed and fed against the guide hollows on the housing.

Advanced tools As an example of an even more advanced cable stripping tool, let’s look at the KNIPEX PreciStrip16. It enables fine, flexible and solid cables to be stripped quickly and precisely. The capacity range extends from 0.08 to 16mm². The pliers can be easily adjusted with a dial for special materials or temperature requirements, while semi-circular metal holding clamps ensure a perfect grip. The high-tech wire stripper is based around parabolic stripping blades that separate insulation from both extremely fine-stranded and solid round cables, then automatically strip it off backwards. The blade pair encloses the insulation and so is suitable for many flexible materials. When needed, the blade cassette can be easily replaced. A patented mechanism automatically regulates the incision depth of the stripping blades to suit the insulation thickness on the conductor within a large capacity range of 0.08 to 16mm²; the neutral point of this mechanism can be precisely adjusted to account for specific conditions of use (such as specific insulation materials and temperatures). This zero-correction allows the wire stripper to strip insulation where traditional automatic devices often fail. The automatic mechanism, which is fitted with a large dial with fine and tactile locking positions, increases the range of the KNIPEX PreciStrip16 so that it can handle particularly hard or soft materials. On top of this, it can also take specific temperature conditions into account. The PreciStrip16 also features a cable cutter on top, which reliably cuts flexible cables up to 16mm² and solid conductors up to 6mm². It has an adjustable length stop for accurate repetitive work. The PreciStrip16 also has a description label so it can be personalised.

electricalcontractingnews.com

“Cable stripping tools range from the small, notched versions to the larger, automatic tools which regulate the stripping depth for you”

When it comes to cutting and stripping wire, the Forged Wire Stripper Multifunctional Electrician Pliers (American style) were developed after a great amount of research and observation of how tradespeople used their wire strippers in the American market. These pliers are equipped with features that set the tool apart from conventional wire strippers – this is a wire stripper meticulously designed to improve upon all facets of the wire stripping experience and make every worker’s job easier and faster. The Forged Wire Stripper’s main feature is its screw cutting holes. These do not have threads on them, so a screw can be inserted and cut, making it faster and easier. Additional features include: locating ridges between the stripping holes so you can easily find the correct stripping holes without looking; wide knurled gripping jaws for twisting wires; and induction-hardened shear cutting blades that offer 50% higher cutting capacity than other wire strippers on the market. Other features include a lock that can be used either right- or left-handed, an internal spring for easy opening and a bolted joint for precise and smooth cutting adjustment.

Two in one Some tools have been designed with features that double its time saving capabilities. The KNIPEX StriX, for instance, is an insulation stripper with cable shears – two essential electrical installations tools in one pair of pliers. It is an ideal tool for single, multiple and fine stranded conductors with plastic or rubber insulation up to 5mm diameter or 10mm² cable cross-section. Increments in the jaw provide a visual orientation aid for stripping consistent lengths (11mm and 16mm). Additionally, easy adjustment to the required diameter of solid or stranded wire can be achieved with the plier’s knurled screw and lock nut. A shear blade is included for cutting copper and aluminium cable and the tool’s slim dimensions means it can access tight areas. KNIPEX, knipex.com

BEST LED WORK LIGHT BUYING GUIDE Choosing the best LED work light can be an overwhelming and confusing process, says Unilite. There are so many options and so much industry lingo that it’s enough to make anyone go back to their mobile phone light. Whether it’s a magnetic LED work light, or one with a stand, this guide looks at the design features the best LED work lights will have.

S

ome LEDs used in work lights are better than others. You can clearly see the difference when you pick up a quality work light compared to a cheap one from the bargain bin of a

hardware shop. The difference is down to the type of LEDs used, whether they are SMD’s or COB LEDs, or even DIP. Let’s look at the differences:

DIP LEDs (Dual In-line Package) DIP LEDs are seen in outdoor applications as they have high resistance properties against impact. This is due to their construction, being surrounded by resin and welded directly onto the circuit board via two pins. The downside, however, is the limited brightness that a DIP LED can produce. To make an effective LED work light comprised of DIP LEDs, the unit itself would have to be impracticably large and cumbersome. Despite this, they are often found on cheap worklights and camping torches, providing a dim and underwhelming light.

56 | May 2022

Tools & Workwear – Unilite.indd 56

SMD LEDs (Surface Mounted Diode)

Disposable batteries – at what cost?

SMD LEDs are used in multiple LED work lights. They are reliable and can pack up to three diodes onto a single SMD chip. This means you can create a different range of colours from a single chip. They do produce more of a glare, which makes it a better choice as a spotlight, rather than as a floodlight. This glare is offset by strong diffusers which fan the spread of the LEDs into a uniform pattern.

Now that we have lithium batteries covered, why do people still use disposable batteries in work lights? It all comes down to convenience. AA and AAA batteries are found everywhere. This means if you run out halfway through a job, simply pop to the shop and pick some up. This however can be quite an expensive way of powering your work light…

COB LEDs – Chip on Board

Common quality materials to look out for are nylonpolymer, copolymer and aluminium

COB LEDs are the latest technology found in work lights. These LEDs pack in more than nine diodes into a single LED chip, making them much more efficient for the space they occupy. This also means they emit more light for the power they consume, leading to brighter LED work lights that operate at greater efficiency.

Rechargeable or disposable? For years, disposable batteries ruled the roost when it came to work lights. The convenience of quickly swapping the batteries out made them popular, versus the long charging time of old battery technology. Thankfully the situation has improved, with lithium batteries found in almost all technology. The question is, what is better? Well, that depends on how often you use it. If this work light is going to receive some serious usage, then a rechargeable battery is going to be its best power source. Unlike old nickel variants, Lithium batteries are a very reliable power source. This is down to the way the energy is charged and discharged. Lithium batteries tend to charge a lot quicker than nickel batteries and have less of a ‘memory effect’ which, in the past, hampered rechargeable batteries’ longevity. A battery memory effect is essentially whether a battery will lose some of its power if recharged when not fully discharged.

Picking a robust and waterproof LED work light You can tell when something is built with higher quality, just by picking it up. When you feel its structure, you can see the robustness of its design. This is one of the key differences between cheap work lights and premium work lights. When shopping online you don’t get the benefit of being able to physically pick the light up, but you can see the construction properties the manufacturer has detailed about them. Common quality materials to look out for are nylon-polymer, copolymer and aluminium. Both ‘polymers’ are used extensively in work light construction, as they provide a strong yet lightweight ‘shell’. This is very important when used regularly and in tough environments. Another nod to build quality is the ‘IP’ rating a work light has. IP stands for ‘Ingres Protection’ and in simple terms refers to its dust and waterproof qualities. When a work light goes through testing, the manufacturer will test its resistance to both dust and water. It should be tested to an industry standard like ANSI FL1, which is an industry-wide testing procedure designed to ensure a uniform level of quality across all manufacturers.

Conclusion There are so many different options when it comes to work lights. Hopefully this guide has helped to cut through the confusion and presented some of the key features to look out for when choosing your new work light. Unilite, unilite.co.uk

SCOLMORE’S CLICK MODE — QUALITY, WHITE ACCESSORIES YOU CAN RELY ON With a myriad of styles and finishes available for wiring accessories, Katie Plumstead, Scolmore’s Group Marketing Manager, looks at what makes simple, white accessories the bread and butter for the electrical contractor.

Flexible choice The Mode range was conceived and developed as a high quality, flexible and modern solution for virtually any domestic wiring requirement. The smooth, contemporary lines of the Mode accessory plate will fit easily into traditional and contemporary designs alike and the modular design allows installers unprecedented flexibility in creating dedicated wiring solutions to deal with specific wiring needs. When selecting wiring accessories, installers have often had to compromise their schemes as they have been unable to identify a suitably flexible solution to satisfy their ideas. Mode accessories

Scolmore has continued to invest in its Click Mode range since it was originally launched

have been providing that flexibility, with a comprehensive selection of products ranging from the humble light switch and socket outlet through to more specialised products dealing with the very latest developments in telephone and satellite products.

Scolmore’s Click Mode range remains the company’s best-selling wiring accessories collection to date

Investment and innovation Scolmore has continued to invest in this range since it was originally launched, introducing products in visually contrasting versions to meet with Part M regulations, adding the award-winning Mode locating plug socket soon after. This was followed by USB sockets available in one- and two-gang, and single and twin USB options, with integrated Type A and Type C charging ports on the same socket, added most recently. The latest development to the Mode range saw the launch of lounge combination plates, giving the installer the flexibility to configure any combination of audio, video, data and media connection on one plate as required.

Advanced hygiene properties Scolmore continues to invest to ensure that its wiring accessory products offer enhanced hygiene properties. Mode, Mode Part M and Polar plates have recently undergone further independent testing and have achieved a 99.98% kill off rate against Influenza A (H1N1) after a 24-hour period. This latest testing further boosts the range’s hygiene credentials. Independent testing previously undertaken has also shown the products to have anti-viral properties against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. After a contact period of four hours, all tested plates were shown to have a 99.9% kill off rate against enveloped viruses and a 92% kill off rate against non-enveloped viruses. This anti-viral testing is in addition to the anti-bacterial testing already carried out. Mode, Mode Part M and Polar ranges are all manufactured using Urea Formaldehyde, which has similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives that inhibit the growth of infectious diseases. When

independently tested, all products achieved a 99.99% kill off rate across all four types of the strains of bacteria – MRSA, E-Coli, Salmonella and Klebsiella Pneumonia.

Quality assured The standard used to qualify Scolmore’s products is ISO 22196. The standard ISO 22916 test method is designed to test the ability of plastics and other similar materials to kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms, over a 24-hour period of contact. ISO 22196 is one of the most commonly requested antimicrobial surface test methods for evaluating the antimicrobial activity of antibacterial treated plastic products. Contractors will have the additional reassurance that all Scolmore BS1363 products – in particular socket outlets – are third party approved and bear the BSI Kitemark logo. The company has held this certification for over 25 years – a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to adhering to the highest standards of quality and safety of the products it supplies to the professional electrical market. Products from the Mode range have been specified and installed across a huge range of applications, including schools, hospitals, care homes, hotels, offices and leisure complexes. SCOLMORE ADDS NEW RCD SOCKETS TO ITS WIRING ACCESSORIES RANGE Scolmore has recently added three new RCD socket outlets to its Essentials wiring accessories range – a 13A 2-gang Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet, a 13A 2 gang IP66 weatherproof Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet and a 13A 2-gang Metal Clad Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet. Scolmore’s new RCD sockets are socket-outlets with an RCD built into them which can be used in place of a standard socket-outlet. These are known as passive RCDs which means that when power is lost due to a fault, the RCD disconnects and isolates the piece of equipment it is protecting. This type of RCD provides protection only to the person in contact with equipment, including its lead, plugged into the RCD socket-outlet. Fixed RCDs, on the other hand, are installed in the consumer unit and can provide protection to individual or groups of circuits. The 13A 2-gang Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet can provide a retro-fit solution for those domestic dwellings with no RCD devices.
